Intro: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere
Country name: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere (known shortly as Ellesmere).
First land: All of the islands situated between modern day Canada and Greenland, in the Hudson Bay, Baffin Bay and Beaufort Sea.
Capital City: Cape Sheridan (the North Eastern tip of Ellesmere island - the island is shown on the image above).
Government type: Federal, Republic, Democratic.
Each island of the nation is a federal state, and has a small government, answerable to the Federal Government, seated in Cape Sheridan.
Religion: The people of Ellesmere are not religious at all and are atheists. The state endorses no particular belief system, faith is kept out of politics and education etc. .
Starting Population: Total of 900,000
400,000 live on Ellesmere island (50% of which in the city of Cape Sheridan).
The other 500,000 live on the other islands of The Federal Republic of Ellesmere.
Information on size of Military: 250,000 of the population are in the armed forces of the nation, this may seem a large proportion of the population, however idle standing armies are not encouraged in Ellesmere, and so in times of peace, the military is used to build infrastructure (such as mining facilities - Ellesmere has plenty of minerals, and general construction). Indeed, the military were instrumental in allowing the nation to prosper in such a cold climate, setting up oil and geothermal power stations providing heat to the cities and settlements of the nation. Cape Sheridan was originally a small fishing outpost, however with the military's active involvement in the construction process, Cape Sheridan grew to support a large population of civilians with the infrastructure needed to prosper from the environment (Bustling harbours; fishing, oil tankards to the handful of oil platforms. Mining; gold, tin and aluminium).
Ellesmere has a handful of powerful navy vessels, protecting the harbours and oil rigs. Of the 250,000 armed forces personnel, 150,000 are in the Navy).
Ellesmere also has a decent air force, employing 70,000 personnel. Its main activity is patrolling the skies to the North, working with the Navy in guarding oil rigs, as well as in the South performing reconnaissance work over the mainland (where Canada is today)
The Army of Ellesmere then employs the rest (30,000), a relatively small share, however the nation has no mainland territory as of yet, and so priorities lie with the Navy and Air Force. The Army also work closely with the Navy on maneuvers.
Starting technologies: Advanced oil bore technology, allows the exploration and extraction of oil to be a quicker affair.
Efficient renewable geothermal technology - used by many of the nations power stations.
The Navy also boasts stealth submarines.
Anything else: To be continued at some point...

Re: Intro: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere
Forgot to mention currency.
The currency used is: The Ellesmere Mark (EM)
This is printed by the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of Cape Sheridan, independent to party politics and the government.
The value of the currency is currently strong enough for trust, yet weak enough to support a market for exports.
1 EM = 1.4 US$

Re: Intro: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere
Here is a more detailed map of the Federal Republic of Ellesmere; showing the island names, maritime borders and a brief overview of the population distribution.
The oil rigs are shown, around the New Jura Isles and to the North of Point Rollo. There is also an offshore oil platform in Baffin Bay.
As mentioned previously, the nation is a very successful exporter of mined metals / minerals, many of the islands boast such resources, and the mining industry is quite visible - particularly on Svaljiik Island.
Agriculture in Ellesmere is a very difficult trade in the cold climates, and the activity is done only in the South, in the vicinity of Hudson Bay. The Winters can be very harsh, and so only the hardiest of crops are grown, with some protection from the elements using government subsidization to purchase greenhouses / machinery. Surpluses in agriculture in Ellesmere are unheard of, the food is thus domestically consumed, rather than exported. 20% of the nation's population's food demand is satisfied by this agriculture, the rest is made up from the lucrative fishing industry (20%, the surpluses are then exported) and from importing food.

Re: Intro: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere
The Federal Republic of Ellesmere now owns territory in Southern Greenland, the location of which a scientific / military facility has been established as part of Project Stable Land. The new province is named Narsaq Inaat. The administrative capital of the province is the new facility, named Tasiilaq, the basic infrastructure, provided by the Ellesmerian military is working towards developing the settlement into a more permanently inhabitable town, including setting up a geothermal power plant and constructing a harbour. A further 1.5% of the nation's GDP is being directed to the area for the purposes of development.

Military figures above are inaccurate. For true figures see here:
Military population in total: 80,000
Of which-
Navy: 40,000
Airforce: 25,000
Army: 15,000
Average military wage currently is above average normal wage at 25,000 EM (35,000 SF).
Total military wage expenditure: 2 800 000 000
This is approximately 56% of the total GDP per annum of the nation.

Re: Intro: The Federal Republic of Ellesmere
Behold, the glorious flag of the Federal Republic of Ellesmere!
Although at first glance, the central coat of arms bearing the hammer and sickle looks communist, it is actually nothing of the sort but rather, combined with the crown, symbolizes the unity between the policy makers (crown), the bourgeoisie (hammer) and the workers (sickle) of the nation. The eagle is also bearing broken shackles, which represents the freedom of movement and general liberty the nation's military has provided by providing construction of infrastructure, allowing habitation of such a harsh climate. Blue is a major theme of the flag and central coat, it symbolizes the countries harmony and closeness with the sea and ice of it's environment.
